Sub-titled: Foot Balance, the Key to Soundness and Performance
With full colour photos and diagrams throughout, and a Foreword by Mac Head FWCF speaking as Master of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, this much-needed book explains why everyone involved with horses - from farriers and vets to owners and trainers - needs to understand the principles of foot balance.
Up to 95% of all horses have some form of foot imbalance which will predispose them to injury. Common problems attributable to faulty foot balance include: lameness, bad backs, bruised heels, hoof cracks, shortened stride/stumbling, arthritis, navicular disease/syndrome, chip fractures, sheared heels, and degenerative diseases.
No Foot, No Horse describes how good farriery can maintain and even enhance performance and soundness, how to check the horse's medio-lateral balance with the aid of a T-square, how to assess the hoof/pastern axis, what to look for when picking up the foot, and the connection between poor feet and bad backs.
Gail Williams has a PhD in equine biomechanics and was formerly Senior Lecturer in Equine Sports Science at De Montfort University. She acts as a consultant in equine locomotion in the UK and America.
Martin Deacon, a Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Farriers (the highest accolade for farriers in the UK), runs a progressive farriery practice in Leicestershire. He is a farriery instructor, examiner and judge for the Worshipful Company, farriery consultant to the British Horse Trials Association and British Equine Team, and is a consultant to leading equine veterinary practices. A former National Farriery Champion, he was a member of the English Farriery Team for 9 years, winning 11 international team events.
