The 'Western' class diesel-hydraulic C-C locomotives featured a unique flat cab and the impressive sound of its Maybach engines. These were among the features which endeared them to enthusiasts and helped to ensure that a few of them survived into preservation, following their demise in BR service in February 1977.
Early workings for this class were between London Paddington and Birmingham Snow Hill, and some of the last duties were also to Birmingham (but diverted to New Street station).
For a while this class dominated services into Devon and Cornwall, which is mainly where we see them in action on this DVD. The programme continues with both lineside and 'from the train' shots of 'Western Champion' on its return to the main line in 2002.
The programme is captioned. It includes a short commentary. A fair amount of the original soundtrack has been used.
