The Great Western Railway line from Bala to Blaenau Ffestiniog was partly built on a former narrow gauge railway. It was a typical GWR branch line that was usually operated by a GWR 0-6-0 pannier tank loco. Probably the best known location on the line is Trawsfynydd, the site of a nuclear power station,

The London & North Western Railway's Conway valley route from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Llandudno had a very different flavour, and continues in use today. At Blaenau Ffestiniog there was an extensive interchange yard between the narrow gauge line bringing slate from the nearby mines for shipment over the standard gauge railway network. Possibly the best known location on this stretch of line is Bettws-y-Coed.
