Senna won this Grand Prix in 1991 and 1993. Mansell won it in his world championship winning season. Ayrton Senna started this Grand Prix in 1994 as his first start for Williams. Unfortunately, it began the year in which he had his tragic death.

The race was not always held here. It used to be held in Jacarapagua near Rio de Janeiro. It was held in Jacarapagua in 1978. It moved back to Interlagos for the next two seasons but then it left again for the 80s.
