Sub-titled 'The History and Background of the National Health Service', this book was published to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom.
Few realise that the NHS was not suddenly invented. Rather it had been suggested many times and was based upon localised forerunners, such as the 'Tredegar Medical Aid Society' in South Wales.
Who better to write the foreword to this book than The Rt Hon Neil Kinnock, whose mother was a District Nurse in Tredegar for over 30 years ? He describes the values and inspirations of the architect of the NHS, The Rt Hon Aneurin Bevan.
This book proposes controversial improvements to the NHS, such as the removal of political control, replacement of the present bureaucracy by medical personnel headed by a matron, and Accident & Emergency treatment at Local Cottage Hospitals.
This is not just a book for health service professionals, it is necessary reading for anyone interested to find out what was behind the great social experiment which the NHS was.
Reviews:
'Ken Bryant has done his fellow citizens a service by writing this book...he is offering the considered view of a user, a beneficiary, of the National Health Service, voicing the feelings of millions.
None of the stern evangelists of a high quality service would have accepted that efficiency and cost-effectiveness could be achieved by increased bureaucracy or stretchers in corridors...'
Taken from foreword by The Right Hon. Neil Kinnock
'I agree with you, the NHS needs a big building programme, must keep up the pressure to preserve it - you can count on my support'
Tony Benn
'Your book is easy to read and informative. I recommend it to all - including politicians'
