Few of us would deny that of all the plants that we grow in our gardens the tree has perhaps the greatest impact and appeal. Whether it is planted for its flower, fruit, foliage, or for its habit or its shade, the tree forms the kingpin in most landscapes and a focal point.
In this comprehensive book, beautifully illustrated with colour plates throughout, Roy Lancaster lists and describes an enormous variety of broad-leaved trees for gardens large and small - he indicates trees suitable for different soils and climates, including those from Mediterranean regions which can be cultivated outside in the milder areas of Britain and Europe or as conservatory subjects elsewhere.
The book lists trees alphabetically and provides a detailed guide to choosing, planting, feeding and pruning trees, together with their after care, with step-by step illustrations.
One cannot stress too strongly the necessity of the growing tree to man's health and survival: the trees of parks, gardens and streets can be called the lungs of a city or town for their leaves make available life-giving oxygen while soaking up carbon dioxide. Trees temper strong winds, their foliage absorbs dust and their roots consolidate soil, preventing erosion and in some cases improving soil fertility.
Roy Lancaster's interest in plants began as a schoolboy when he became involved in the compilation of the flora of Bolton in the North of England where he lived.
Before joining the Hillier Nurseries in 1962 he studied for two years at the University of Cambridge Botanic Gardens. In 1970 he became the first Curator of the Hillier Arboretum.
Roy Lancaster has written many books. He writes regularly for the Royal Horticultural Society's journal The Garden and contributes on a regular basis to a number of other professional journals. He broadcasts on both radio and television.
For over twenty years Roy Lancaster has been lecturing around the world and has led botanical tours and treks to many countries, including several trips to China. He is a committee member of the RHS and was awarded the Society's Gold Veitch Memorial Medal in 1972, the Victoria Medal of Honour in 1988, and an OBE.
