Submachine Guns [DC]

Submachine Guns

This handbook is an authoritative guide, by a leading weapons expert, to the world's most important submachine guns, from the Bergmann Musquete and Tommy gun of the 1920s to the innovative modern P90 Personal Defence Weapon. Born in World War I, the submachine gun came to maturity in World War II in the hands of Commandos, Rangers, Panzer-Grenadiers and Soviet Tank Riders. It also armed many guerrillas, resistance fighters and partisans. The MP40, trademark of the German army, and its Allied counterparts the Sten, the Grease Gun and the Pepeskka, were all produced by the million.

After the war these weapons were replaced by more efficient designs, epitomised by the Israeli Uzi and the German MP5, but at the same time the military adoption of short assault rifles turned the submachine gun into a weapon for police security and counter-terrorist forces. However, the escalating cost of specialist assault rifles brought the military back to the submachine gun as a personal defence weapon for the non-infantry elements of the army.

The increasing use of body armour and other personal protection has raised a demand for weapons capable of far greater performance than the submachine guns of the past, leading to a new generation of designs. Submachine Guns covers all significant aspects of design and employment, with data for each weapon on length, weight, barrel, magazine, muzzle velocity, cyclic rate and cartridges.

Key points:
  • A compact and authoritative guide to the world's submachine guns
  • A gun-by-gun directory identifying individual variants and types
  • Includes technical data and background details
